Here at GHW, we were recently involved in a project to renovate St Silas’ Church, working with the team at DIY SOS: The Big Build, one of the nation’s most well-known property shows. This project was undertaken to help Nightsafe, a local charity that provides support to young homeless people in Blackburn and surrounding areas.

Nightsafe and the work they perform

Nightsafe is a Blackburn-based charity that was set up in 1990 to improve the lives of young homeless people aged 16 – 24. The charity is run by a number of fully trained staff along with local volunteers.

They provide ongoing support and shelter to some of the most vulnerable groups in society. For example, someone can stay at The Shelter, which is one of their accommodation centres, for up to 9 nights whilst alternative accommodation is located. However, a new accommodation centre was required in order to support the number of homeless young people living in Blackburn and the surrounding areas.

Fortunately, St Silas’ Church, which is only a short distance away from Nightsafe’s current centre, kindly agreed to lease their Parish Room to the charity so it could be developed into additional accommodation for the young and vulnerable people living in Blackburn.

Nightsafe have been supported by BBC Children in Need for a number years, and as part of their ongoing support, the DIY SOS team, working in conjunction with BBC Children in Need, kindly agreed to complete the conversion of the building for the charity.

How we helped

For the conversion, the DIY SOS team was looking for product donations and volunteers to help the project progress. So, we decided to volunteer to help with this excellent project.

Mick and Anthony from the Great Harwood Windows Installation Team installed a 3 pane Aluminium Bi-fold Door in White for the project. They also thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent with all the other local tradespeople and the crew from DIY SOS.

Here’s what Jimmy Hindle, our Managing Director, had to say:

“Having been based in Blackburn for over 20 years it’s fantastic to able to be a part of something so fantastic and give just a little bit back to the community.”

You can tune in to watch this episode of DIY SOS: The Big Build in November during BBC Children in Need Appeal week.
